A specific phobia can sometimes begin after a shocking event. Often as early as childhood.\u00a0<\/p><p>For example, if you were attacked by a dog as a child, you may become extremely fearful of dogs. But seeing something exciting, or hearing about it, can also lead to a specific phobia.\u00a0<\/p><p>Sometimes, as an adult, you don't remember why you became anxious about something. Sometimes the environment you grew up in plays a role. When your parents were afraid of something, you may have adopted it.\u00a0<\/p><p>The fear causes you to <b>avoid situations<\/b>. This is called avoidance and it is an understandable reaction. After all, it provides short-term relaxation and peace of mind. But in the long run, this avoidance behavior is harmful. For it causes anxiety to persist and may even increase.\u00a0<\/p><p>You won't get a chance to discover that\u00a0<i>not\u00a0<\/i>happens that you are afraid of. For example, that nothing nasty happens when a dog walks by or you see a needle.\u00a0<\/p><p>When fear arises and persists, thoughts are important. This is because fear causes you to estimate the danger to be greater than it really is. With a dog, for example, you may think the animal will bite, while the chance of that happening is very small. You can fall into a <b>downward spiral<\/b> .
